2011 Live Performances and broadcasts of recordings of local, national and international concerts

November 2 - Hannah, Catherine, Andy and Frank all moved from Canberra to Melbourne in early 2011. Whilst finding their feet in a new city they found each other again. This fatalistic reunion lead to the formation of Atluk. The group were playing a mean game of Balderdash when they came across the perfect name for their sweet sound; ‘Atluk’ is old English for a seal’s breathing hole in the ice. Dubbing their style as Saccharine-Folk, their music mixes the narrative style of Belle & Sebastian and the light-hearted romance of She & Him, they also have the occasional group harmonies of Boy & Bear and the warm melodies of Angus & Julia Stone. Every song is a quest to tell you a story and a tune get stuck in your heart.

Hannah previously played and sung in a duo "Hannah and Sam" and at just 17 had her music played on TripleJ as a featured artist in 2008. Her song writing has matured with her, plus some selected older works have re-hatched by the band with new life and dimension. The family piano has been a cultivator of much music; Hannah has written the majority of works sitting at its creaky frame. Andy has fronted four bands and gigged for eight years but now feels at home in Atluk. Catherine migrated from the classical world of orchestral double bass playing in 2008 to join Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens and Rafe and the Well Dressed. Swapping the music stand for a microphone, she joins in the vocal trio with Hannah and Andy. Occasionally she swaps the double bass for an electric when there's no decent trams to a venue. Frank was a Canberra drummer veteran, drumming for bands including Starfish Hill and Magic Hands.

When they’re not writing songs and practicing together in our lounge room, or playing shows around Melbourne; Frank draws pictures on his bathroom mirror  with whiteboard markers and plays lazar tag. Catherine cooks dal and teaches kiddies to play in an orchestra. Andy feeds his monsters on his computer game and skateboards around the city. And Hannah watch films from the public library and stitches something up to wear next on stage.

June 17 - Matt and Jocelyn have been playing together since the start of 2010. They played at the Merimbula and Moruya Jazz Festivals to gracious audiences willing to hear something a little bit different. At the beginning of 2011 they invited Rafael Jerjen (Bass) and Henry Rasmussen (kit) to join them. The last six months with Raf and Henry have been about exploration of textures and arrangements of old standards, contemporary pieces and originals. The group draws on many different influences and tries to make these evident within their arrangements. The group have recently returned from the Merimbula Jazz Festival where they were welcomed with great enthusiasm and played to comments like ‘ the highlight of the festival.’ They are looking forward to performing in the Canberra Jazz Festival in August and are looking forward to again appearing at the Moruya Jazz Festival in October.

Matt Thompson – originally from Sydney, studied piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, completed Honours at the ANU and is now the Piano lecturer at the School of Music.
