THE VAMPIRES IN CONCERT AT THE LOFT! We were lucky enough to catch the Vampires at the Loft on the occasion of their third CD launch tour to Canberra last week. The Vampires comprise Jeremy Rose (alto), Nick Garbett (trumpet), Alex Masso (drums) with Lloyd Swanton (bass) and Fabian Hevia (percussion) sitting in for this concert. In a unanimous resolution, the Board:

• Acknowledges that many members of the community, including Artsound members, are extremely concerned about recent announcements regarding the structure of the School of Music;
• Strongly values ArtSound’s relationship with the school, including the promotion, recording and broadcasting of performances by School of Music staff and students;
• Believes that the proposals potentially compromise the strong and mutually beneficial relationship between the School of Music, its staff and students, and Artsound FM;
• Notes that the proposals are the subject of a three-week consultation period, and
• Reiterates its responsibility as a community broadcaster to ensure that on-air discussion and debate on matters of public interest is balanced.

The Board resolved that:

• On behalf of members, to contribute to the consultation by publicly expressing, as an arts-based broadcaster, its strong opposition to any changes that would diminish the school’s attractiveness to students and staff, and hence the quality and variety of musical performance in Canberra; and
• As part of its programming responsibilities, to encourage balance on-air debate about the proposals, provided that all sides have an opportunity to present their views in the same program.

The proposed changes are available on the ANU School of Music website.

On Friday Night Live tonight we take you to the John Lingard Hall at Canberra Grammar School for a night of polished contemporary jazz from one of the best outfits in Canberra, drawing partly on the School of Music Jazz Faculty - the Niels Rosendahl Quartet. Niels Rosendahl leads on sax with Paul Dalbroi on keyboard, Eric Ajaye on bass and Gary France on drums. The concert was organized a few weeks ago as a fundraiser to support Niels' visit to Texas to audition for a prestigious jazz school there (he was successful). Recorded by Tony Hunter. The Janet Seidel Trio return to the Canberra Southern Cross Club this Thursday, 17th May after an eight month tour of the United Kingdom and Europe. Janet Seidel (pictured centre) shares some of the highlights of this tour with Bill Stephens in this week’s “Dress Circle”.
