INTRODUCTORY PROGRAM
Bill, Pat and Timothy StephensThis program introduces the series, explaining some of the history of "The School of Arts Café" and featuring performances recorded at the cafe by several of the artists who performed there, including Simon Burke, Margi De Ferranti, Derek Metzger, Sharon Millerchip, Tony Barber, Maree Johnson and Dale Burridge. The Cafe was owned and operated throughout its lifetime by Bill Stephens, his wife, Pat, and their son, Timothy.
Program 1 SANKI KIM - Accompanist: Lee Moore
Sanki KimKorean tenor, Sanki Kim, was the first artist to perform at The School of Arts Café. This program tells the story of how Sanki Kim's appearances opened the way for "The School of Arts Café" to become The Café for the Show-biz Connoisseur" and features several songs performed by Sanki Kim.
Program 2 CONNIE STRAIT - Accompanist: Norma Robertson
Connie StraitAmerican lounge singer, Connie Strait, was also integral to the early success of The School of Arts Café. This program demonstrates why. Songs include "Manhattan", "People", "You Don't Send Roses" and "Over the Rainbow".
Program 3 BRONWYN SULLIVAN and HOWARD WARD
Bronwyn Sullivan and Howard WardGlamorous music theatre leading lady and superlative interpreter of torch songs, Bronwyn Sullivan performs songs by Stephen Sondheim, Maury Yeston and Carol Bayer Sager. Also included are duets with Howard Ward and Ronald Maconaghie.
Program 4 MARIE JENSEN - Accompanist: Lee Moore
Marie JensenOne of Canberra’s most popular character actors, Marie Jensen specialised in songs for slightly dotty ladies. For her solo program at the School of Arts Café, Marie presented a collection of very funny point songs which brilliantly displayed her comedic skills.
Program 5 JOAN RICHARDS and PHIL PERMAN - Accompanist: Lee Moore
Joan Richards and Phil PermanJoan Richards and Phil Perman were two of the best known singers in the Canberra Region. They had appeared in starring roles in a succession of operas, operettas and musical comedies, including a production of “White Horse Inn”, directed by Bill Stephens for the Canberra Philharmonic Society. They were among the first artists to be invited to prepare a program for presentation at The School of Arts Cafe.
Program 6 THE COMEDIENNES Rosemary Hyde, Linda Pearson, Judy Burnett - Accompanist: Norma Robertson
Rosemary Hyde, Linda Pearson and Judy BurnettAll veterans of the Canberra Repertory Society’s Old Time Music Halls, Rosemary Hyde, Judy Burnett and Linda Pearson were all popular soloists at The School of Arts Café. In this program these three very funny ladies, with widely varying comedic skills, combine their talents to present a selection of naughty but nice music hall songs.
Program 7 I LOVE A PIANO - NORMA ROBERTSON AND ANDREW KAY
Andrew Kay & Norma RobertsonDuo-pianists Norma Robertson and Andrew Kay provided the accompaniments for the annual Canberra Repertory Old Time Music Halls for fifteen years. Their program at the School of Arts Café - “I Love a Piano” – is a joyous celebration of this extraordinary musical partnership.
Program 8 JUDY BURNETT - Accompanist: Pauline Sweeney
Judy BurnettAn extraordinarily talented comedienne and character actor, Judy Burnett was just as convincing, and hilarious, whether playing a five-year old or a Jewish mother. Her programs at The School of Arts Café attracted devoted audiences and this program taken from her first solo show at the café, "Just Jude" demonstrates why.
Program 9 KATE PETERS - Accompanist: David Whitbread
Kate PetersOne of Canberra's most experienced entertainers, Kate Peters had played leading roles in a succession of musicals and Charity concerts before making her first appearances at The School of Arts Café. In this program Kate convincingly demonstrates why she became one of the café's most popular and regular artists.
Program 10 GERY SCOTT - Accompanist: Tony Magee
Gery ScottHead of the Vocal Jazz Department at the Canberra School of Music, Gery Scott began singing at The School of Arts Café two days after her 68th Birthday. She continued to present regular showcase programs at the café right up until it closed. This program features excerpts from two of those programs "Gery Scott Sings Mostly Coward" and "Particularly Porter".
Program 11 SOPHISTICATED SWING - Accompanist: Nola Birmingham
Sophisticated SwingFormed in 1988, “Sophisticated Swing” was a unique and entertaining ensemble of some 20 ladies who specialised in programs of superb harmony singing. Their delightful personalities, inventive programming and choreography and fine singing drew loyal audiences to their programs at the School of Arts Café for over ten years.
Program 12 THE YOUNG ACHIEVERS PETER J. CASEY, DAVID PEARSON, MARK FULLER, QUEENIE VAN DE ZANDT - Accompanist: Peter J. Casey
Mark Fuller, Queenie van de Zandt & Peter J. CaseyPeter J. Casey, David Pearson, Mark Fuller and Queenie van de Zandt were all young Canberra artists who made early appearances at The School of Arts Café. In this program of highlights selected from two of their early café presentations, they demonstrate the potential which took them on to achieve significant individual careers as professional entertainers.

June BronhillA long season at The School of Arts Café by the legendary June Bronhill heralded a new and exciting period for the café. In this program June recreates some career highlights and performs several songs including "Vilia" and "Love is My Reason for Living".
Episode 14 LORRAE DESMOND - Accompanist: Jack Thorpe
Lorrae DesmondOne of Australia's most accomplished television and stage entertainers performs excerpts from her acclaimed autobiographical cabaret which includes moving renditions of "The Theme from 'A Country Practice'", "Leaving on a Jetplane" and "Yesterday when I was Young".
Program 15 JAN ADELE - Accompanist: Greg Burgess
Jan Adele"Alone, Alive, Adele" was the name of the autobiographical cabaret, vaudevillian Jan Adele, presented for two weeks at The School Of Arts Café. This episode features excerpts from that cabaret, and includes Jan's arresting interpretation of "You Will Remember My Name" from the Australian musical "Better Known as Bea" in which Jan had previously starred.
Program 16 GERALDINE TURNER - Accompanist: Robyn Walmsley
Geraldine TurnerGeraldine Turner is synonymous with Australian showbusiness. She starred in many of the great musicals including "Chicago" with Nancye Hayes, "Oliver", "Anything Goes" and "Guys and Dolls". In this episode, Geraldine sings songs from many of the shows in which she appeared, plus a few from shows in which she didn't.
Program 17 NANCYE HAYES - Accompanist: Julia De Plater
Nancye HayesStage Legend, Nancye Hayes, presents excerpts from her celebrated one-woman show, "Nancye With An E", including a medley from the show which rocketed her to fame, "Sweet Charity".
Program 18 CRAIG SCHNEIDER and friends
Craig SchneiderOne of the most talented musicians to graduate from the Canberra School of Music Jazz course was Craig Schneider. However, despite his prodigious abilities as a jazz pianist, Craig had his heart set on becoming an all-round performer, and used his frequent appearances at The School of Arts Café to hone these skills. In this episode Craig demonstrates those skills in a program celebrating the music of Nat King Cole.
Program 19 TONI LAMOND - Accompanist: Tony Magee
Toni LamondAnother of the great ladies of the Australian stage, Toni Lamond, presents excerpts from her show, "Woman on the Move", including a superb rendition of "Such a Night as This" and Cole Porter's tongue twister, "Let's Not Talk About Love". The program concludes with a medley of Peter Allen songs.
Program 20 TONY MAGEE and friends
Tony MageeCanberra pianist, Tony Magee, had a long association with The School of Arts Café providing impeccable accompaniments for a succession of artists including Toni Lamond, Gery Scott, Kate Peters and Wilf Jones. In this series of excerpts, taken from his own showcase season, "Tony Magee Upfront", Tony Magee pays tribute to many of the great pianists who had influenced his career.
Program 21 WENDY ANN HART - Accompanist: Peter J. Casey
Wendy Ann HartWendy Ann Hart specializes in torch songs. In this program she performs a selection of such songs by George Gershwin, Jacque Brel and Stephen Sondheim in her own highly individual and distinctive style.
Program 22 WITCHES AND SERVIETTES
The Witches (above) & The Fabulous Serviettes (below)Singing groups were always popular at the School of Arts Café. Ensembles ranged from large groups like “Sophisticated Swing” and “Rhythm Syndicate” to trios and duos. This program features two of the trios – “The Witches” and “The Fabulous Serviettes” who achieved great popularity at the café with their programs.
Episode 23 WILF JONES and Friends
Wilf JonesVeteran violinist Wilf Jones has played with most of the famous light music orchestras including those of Mantovani, Frank Chacksfield, Robert Farnon and Norrie Paramor. For this program he is joined by several top Canberra musicians including Anton Wurzer, George Urbascek, Tony Magee and Louisa Searle.
Program 24 DAVID CAMPBELL - Accompanist: Peter J. Casey
David CampbellOne of Australia's most acclaimed and accomplished cabaret artists, David Campbell presented several programs at The School of Arts Café. This episode features excerpts from his first, "Nowadays" in which the songs include Sondheim's' "Buddy's Blues", Craig Cornelia's "The Kid Inside" and Maltby and Shire's "I Don't Remember Christmas".
Program 25 CORALIE WOOD - Accompanist: David Whitbread
Coralie WoodA Canberra institution, subject of a best-selling biography and founder of the acclaimed CAT Awards, flamboyant theatrical publicist, Coralie Wood, is an accomplished entertainer who presented several popular cabarets at The School of Arts Café. This program features excerpts from her first café presentation, “Coralie Lashes Out”.
Program 26 NOEL FERRIER - Accompanist: Darren Mapes
Noel FerrierRecorded just months before his untimely death, this episode features excerpts from Noel's autobiographical cabaret "Ferrier in the Round" which he had written especially for his appearances at The School of Arts Café. This is Noel Ferrier at his over-the-top, riotous, cheeky and silly best.
Program 27 GRAHAM ROBERTSON - Accompanist: Norma Robertson
Graham RobertsonVeteran of Canberra Repertory's "Old Time Music Hall" productions, Graham Robertson is not only an accomplished character actor, but also a formidable cabaret performer as he demonstrates in this collection of delightful nonsense, which includes "Rabbitoh" from the musical "The Sentimental Bloke".
Program 28 SHORTIS & SIMPSON - John Shortis, Moya Simpson and Kerry Ella
Moya Simpson, John Shortis and Kerry EllaThe popular songwriting team of John Shortis and Moya Simpson presented many shows at The School of Arts Café including the very last one. This program, however, features a selection of their original material from their first "Bull "n Bush Christmas Party" for which they teamed with Kerry Ella.
Program 29 DONNA LEE - Accompanist: Peter J. Casey
Donna LeeDonna Lee's showbusiness pedigree stretches back over six generations. Her mother was the legendary Australian music theatre star, Gloria Dawn, and her father, juggler extraordinaire, Frank Cleary. In these excerpts from her cabaret show, "Donna's Turn", Donna traces her career in showbiz from child actress to acclaimed music theatre star in her own right.
Program 30 TONY BARBER - Accompanist: Mark Jones
Tony BarberAlthough best known as a television Quiz Master - he first found fame in a television commercial for Cambridge cigarettes – Tony Barber is also an accomplished cabaret performer. In these excerpts from his autobiographical cabaret at The School of Arts Café, Tony mixes stories and songs to tell the fascinating story of his rise to television stardom.
Program 31 KERRY ELLA - Accompanist: Steve Holden
Kerry EllaGlamorous, witty and a highly individual songstress, Kerry Ella is also a remarkably accomplished actress. All these talents are on show in her delightfully cheeky cabaret "Storm in a D Cup". Songs include "I Want To Be Happy" and "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered".

Malcolm Tapscott, Megan Corson and David PearsonConcert pianist and music critic Malcolm Tapscott, with singers Megan Corson and David Pearson present songs by the immortal Jerome Kern. This program features songs from many of Kern's most famous shows including "Showboat".
Program 33 TEA ROSE DUO Sarah and Bernard Depasquale
The Tea Rose DuoAdelaide based husband and wife team, the Tea Rose Duo, were frequent performers on the tiny stage of The School of Arts Café. The lovely salon arrangements of popular melodies played in the Palm Court style won them a strong following at the café. In these episodes from one of their early shows, you'll find out why.
Program 34 JACQUIE RAE - Accompanist: Lindsay Partridge
Jacquie RaeGamin faced singer, dancer, actor, Jacquie Rae, came to prominence in the musical "Anything Goes". But she was also a consummate cabaret performer, as audiences who attended her show "My Own Space" at The School of Arts Café, were quick to discover. In these excerpts from that show, Jacquie sings several songs by Kander and Ebb.
Episode 35 COMBO FIASCO
Combo FiascoOne of the most popular vocal ensembles to play The School of Arts Café was the brilliant "Combo Fiasco" – Sharon Millerchip, Tony McGill and Shaun Murphy. Acclaimed for their tight harmonies and wicked sense of humour "Combo Fiasco" thrilled audiences in New York, Sydney and Melbourne, and of course, Queanbeyan where their performances were recorded at The School of Arts Café. This program features excerpts from one of these performances including a cheeky 10 minute version of "Phantom of the Opera".
Program 36 SIMON BURKE - Accompanist: Ron Creager
Simon BurkeWhen he appeared at The School of Arts Café in 1997, Simon Burke had just returned to Australia after playing opposite Dame Judi Dench in "A Little Night Music". In these excerpts from his show "If You Were Wondering", recorded at the café, Simon sings a song from that show and includes a charming segment celebrating his days as a "Play School" presenter.
Program 37 JACKIE REES - Accompanist: Mark Jones
Jackie Rees"Love and Other Peculiar Disorders" was the name of the cabaret show Melbourne entertainer, Jackie Rees, brought to The School of Arts Café. It was a title which allowed Jackie to perform a superb collection of contemporary music theatre and cabaret songs – some serious, some hilarious, but all with a comment to make on love and its aftermath.
Program 38 DEREK METZGER - Accompanist: Ron Creager
Derek MetzgerNew Zealand music theatre performer, Derek Metzger, toured Australia as the star of the musical "Me and My Girl", though not before he had starred on the West End in London in the hit musical "42nd Street". In this episode, Derek tells the story of his climb to music theatre stardom, and sings songs from many of the shows in which he appeared, including a delightful medley from "Me and My Girl".
Program 39 MAREE JOHNSON - Accompanist: Vanessa Scammell
Maree JohnsonWhen Maree Johnson won the Sydney Cabaret Convention in 1998 she was already an established music theatre star, having played leading roles in the national tours of "Phantom of the Opera" and "Les Miserables". Her Sydney Cabaret Convention win earned Maree the opportunity to perform in cabaret venues in New York, and to bring back several superb cabaret songs which she included in her seasons at The School of Arts Café. In this episode, Maree sings some of those songs.
Program 40 DALE BURRIDGE - Accompanist: Andrew Ross
Dale BurridgeIn this episode we shine the spotlight on Dale Burridge, and find out how he came to play a nun in "The Sound of Music". You will also hear about his audition for the West End production, and hear him sing songs from "Phantom of the Opera" and "Les Miserables", two shows in which he toured Australia.
Program 41 ANGELA AYERS - Accompanist: Ray Aldrich
Angela AyersOnce voted "Pop Queen of New Zealand Television", Angela Ayers received her first big break in Australia in the original Australian production of "A Chorus Line". She went on to star in a succession of major musicals including "Guys and Dolls" opposite Anthony Warlow, and "Jerry's Girls". In this program, Angela sings songs from these shows and reflects on her theatrical career.
Program 42 JOHN O'MAY - Accompanist: Rodney Kendall
John O'MayMusic theatre leading man, John O'May, tells how he came to be cast as Che Guevara in the first Australian production of "Evita", the role which catapulted him to stardom, and sings songs from "Evita" and "Chicago" as well as many of the other shows in which he has appeared.

Margi De FerrantiOne of Australia's foremost cabaret performers, Margi De Ferranti includes the song which was the talk of the inaugural Sydney Cabaret Convention and which was instrumental in winning her the first prize, a trip to New York to sing at the New York Cabaret Convention, in these excerpts from her dynamic cabaret act "It's Delightful, It's Delicious, It's De Ferranti".

Kane AlexanderKane Alexander came to The School of Arts Café direct from acclaimed appearances at the Firebird Café and the Algonquin Oak Room in New York. This program features excerpts from Kane's cabaret act "Into the Fire" which inspired hardened New York cabaret critics to vote him "Best New Voice" and "Most Outstanding Debut".

Marietta Rups-DonnellyFind out about the curse of the white dress from the artist who played Evita Peron in the original Australian production of "Evita". Marietta Rups-Donnelly vividly tells the story of the cost of her rise to fame and how the role of Evita was to forever influence her life in her compelling auto-biographical cabaret "Don't Cry For Me".

Jennifer LeslieUsing only the words of Edith Piaf and featuring many of the songs which had propelled Piaf to international fame, Jennifer Leslie captures the charismatic presence of the real singer in a tour-de-force performance which is both compelling and moving.

Todd McKenneyAustralia's original "Boy From Oz" presents excerpts from his delightful cabaret "Feeling Himself Again". Accompanied by the incredible Tim Minchin on piano, Todd shares some of the secrets of his experiences recreating on stage the persona of Peter Allen and sings songs from the show.

Con, Yuri, Susan and Valerie MavridisFour highly trained classical musicians, two brothers and their wives, who spend their lives performing on luxury cruise liners, stay landlocked long enough to present this fascinating program of light classical music and show tunes.

Trevor AshleyIn these excerpts from his cheeky cabaret show ""Trevor – The Arena Mega Musical", Trevor Ashley demonstrates the talent which has seen him go on to become one of Australia's most accomplished cabaret artists and perform starring roles in "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" and "Hairspray".
Program 55 VOCAL DESIGN
Vocal DesignSusan Anderson, Andrew Irvine, Sharon Wisnieski and Brendan Monger, all graduates of The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, established Vocal Design to explore various styles of vocal music. They quickly became one of Sydney's hottest vocal ensembles. In this program they demonstrate why.
Program 56 BRUCE BARRY - Accompanist: Peter J. Casey
Bruce BarryBefore he became famous for his appearances in some of Australia's most popular television series, Bruce Barry had forged a formidable career as a leading man in such musicals as "Funny Girl", "A Little Night Music" ,"Hello, Dolly!" and "Irma La Douce". In these excerpts from "An Evening with Bruce Barry", Bruce reflects on his career and sings a selection of his favourite songs.

Margret RoadKnightLegendary folk singer, Margret RoadKnight, demonstrates that she is no slouch as a magnetic cabaret performer in these excerpts from her autobiographical cabaret, "Adjusting the Rearview Mirror", which was written especially for presentation at the School of Arts Café.

Lynn RogersInternationally acclaimed songstress, Lynn Rogers, had a big voice – and a personality to match. Her appearance at the School of Arts Café provided a performance to savour and a night to remember. Her performance is beautifully captured in these excerpts from her cabaret show, “What’s a Woman”.
Program 61 JUDY GLEN - Accompanist: Bransby Byrne
Judy GlenA former principal soprano with the Australian Opera, Judy Glen is also an accomplished comedienne. She combines these two talents to devastating effect in her hilarious cabaret, “Spaghetti Opera”, in which she provides the definitive masterclass on how to become an operatic Diva.

Jon Stephens and Jon FinlaysonBud Flanagan and Chesney Allen strutted their stuff on the music hall stages of London for almost four decades and their style became known world wide. Jon Finlayson and Jon Stephens recreate, through Flanagan and Allen’s songs and comic routines, the magic of these two great stars of the glory days of Music Hall and Vaudeville.

Warren KermondA third generation entertainer, Warren Kermond’s career has spanned over 40 years as an acrobat, tap dancer, musical theatre and cabaret artist both in Australia and Internationally. In this program, prepared especially for his appearances at The School of Arts Café, Warren shares the songs and experiences of a lifetime in theatre.
Episode 65 THE MUSIC OF FLANDERS AND SWANN - ROSEMARY HYDE AND DAVID URQUHART-JONES - Accompanist: David Urquhart-Jones
David Urquhart-Jones and Rosemary HydeMichael Flanders and Donald Swann achieved world-wide fame with a show called “At The Drop of A Hat”, a show which included a whole clutch of animal songs, at least two of which – “The Hippopotamus” and “A Gnu” – have become almost traditional. In this program, Rosemary Hyde and David Urqhart-Jones share their mutual enthusiasm for the songs of Flanders and Swann.

Peter J. CaseyComposer, entertainer, accompanist extraordinaire, broadcaster, satirist and Canberra Times Artist of the Year, Peter J. Casey is one of Canberra’s most sought-after performing artists. He was also one of the first artists to perform at The School of Arts Café as a member of a male vocal quartet called The Vocal Chords. For this program, Peter J.Casey accompanies himself on piano to present excerpts from his solo show at the café “Closes on Saturday Night”.
Program 67 LISA ADAM and ADAM CHAMPION - Accompanist: Leisa Keen
Lisa Adam and Adam ChampionFresh from graduating from WAAPA, Lisa and Adam made their first appearances as part of the vocal ensemble, “Bite My Chilli”. Lisa has gone on to principal roles in “Jersey Boys”, “Man of La Mancha” and “The Rocky Horror Show”. This program features excerpts from their second show at the café, “Are You Calling Me Fat?”

Annie FrancisWinner of the 2000 Sydney Cabaret Convention, Annie Francis presented her very first cabaret show at The School of Arts Café. She has since gone on to win two MO Awards and become a busy full-time entertainer for top cruise lines and venues around Australia.

Fifi L'Amour and Rodolfo RavissantDirect from Amsterdam, Fifi L’Amour and Rodolfo Ravissant brought an authentic flavour of genuine European cabaret to The School of Arts Café with their exuberant, colourfully costumed show. The songs of Jacques Brel, Brecht and Weill, as well as those of Cole Porter, feature in this delightful show.

Mark Holden and Craig SchneiderThese days best known as a judge on AUSTRALIAN IDOL, Mark Holden was himself a teenage idol in the 1970’s. His top ten hits include “I Wanna Make You My Lady” and “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again”. But for his show at The School of Arts Café, Mark chose to celebrate “100 years of Australian Song”, for which he joined forces with outstanding jazz pianist Craig Schneider. This program features selections from that show.
