Description

Selby & Friends’ 2020 Season opener, A Tale of Two Cities, is a fascinating program of piano trios created in two of the world’s greatest cultural hubs of the 18th and 19th centuries, Vienna and St Petersburg. From Vienna, we present a beloved piano trio by Mozart and Brahms’ Trio for clarinet, cello and piano, and from St Petersburg, the powerful first trio by Anton Arensky and Stravinsky’s gem, ‘A Soldier’s Tale’ for violin, clarinet and piano.

Artistic Director, Kathryn Selby AM’s guest artist roster for this tour program exemplifies her 2020 Season focus on talented next-generation artists who are making waves internationally. Pianist Selby is joined by virtuoso violinist Emily Sun, ABC’s 2018 Australian Young Performer of the Year now residing in London;  Benjamin Mellefont, Principal Clarinet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra; and Naumburg International Competition winner and member of the Chicago Chamber Players and the Clarosa Piano Quartet, cellist Clancy Newman.

Ms. Selby says of her 2020 launch program, which tours to six city and regional centres from 1-8 March:

“What a wonderful opportunity to work with my old friend Clancy and two brilliant and intriguing young Australian artists whose panache and talent are a heady mix  – the program is well suited to showcase a huge variety of genres from four fascinating composers – this will be a terrific tour!”

With gorgeous chamber music, artist commentary from the stage, the focus on two of the most influential, buzzing cultural centres of the past two centuries, and stunning performances by illustrious Australian musicians, this is a concert program well placed to kick off a brilliant 2020 Season.
