That’s your streaming race for this week! Pick your contender and hit play—the race is on!

  • Coming in at number five, we’ve got Chad Powers holding on to the chart, but it’s slipping down one spot from last week’s number 4 position. Still a solid performer, but the competition is heating up.
  • At number four, House of Guiness also takes a small tumble, dropping from number 3 last week. The buzz around this one is still strong, but two new entries are shaking things up.
  • Now at number three, we have our first new entry—The Last Frontier! This one’s crashed into the chart out of nowhere and Aussies are absolutely loving it. Keep an eye on this one.
  • Sliding into number two, it’s Black Rabbit, which held the crown last week but gets knocked down a peg. Still massive numbers though, and losing to this week’s champion is nothing to be ashamed of.
  • And taking the top spot at number one—the other new entry—The Diplomat! This political thriller has absolutely exploded onto the scene, debuting straight at number one. What a way to enter the chart!

Notable casualties this week: Wayward and High Potential have both dropped out of the top 5 entirely.

That’s your streaming race for this week! Grab your popcorn, pick your favorite contender, and hit play. The race is on!

Its set on a Native American Reservation in Wyoming. Jeremy Renner plays the co-lead as a wildlife officer, which is government speak for, he’s a hunter. And while he is out tracking a mountain lion that’s killing the livestock of the surrounding farmers, he discovers the body of a young woman in the snow. Now, because its set on a Native American Reservation, there is some funky law stuff going on that I won’t pretend to understand, but it means that a singular federal agent (played by Elizabeth Olsen) is sent out to investigate. She employs the help of the local police, and because they are horribly understaffed, she deputises the hunter to utilise his knowledge of the area.

This movie does something that I personally, really appreciate, it just tells its story. You know how sometimes crime thrillers try way too hard to trick you into guessing who dunnit, and they create all of these subplots within subplots within subplots to distract you, but really all it achieves is just a confusing tangle of crap that poorly resolves itself and you sit there thinking, like, “What is even happening?” Wind River doesn’t do any of that. There is of course the Native American angle that accompanies the main storyline, and it is quite confronting and challenging, but it just rides alongside and doesn’t preach or override the story. It just follows the investigation as it builds to its natural climax, you know the one that crime thrillers do, the final showdown, the Mexican standoff, the chase through the abandoned warehouse. And man, this one is goooooood. Sweaty palms, heart racing, the lot.

In summary, crime thriller, no mucking about, good old-fashioned story telling with some incredible scenery, excellent acting, and a killer ending.

The incredible diversity of films dropping in our city’s cinemas right now is something to behold.

Let’s start with something delightfully weird. Bugonia is a sci-fi comedy that asks the question: what if your conspiracy theorist friend was actually onto something? Two young men, absolutely convinced they’ve cracked the code, kidnap a high-powered CEO because they believe she’s an alien plotting Earth’s destruction. It’s absurd, it’s tense, and it’s the kind of genre-bending chaos that makes you question everything. Of all the alien abduction stories you’ve heard, trust me, this one is different.

Now, if anime is your thing, Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc has just arrived, and fans have been waiting for this one. Denji, our chainsaw-wielding protagonist, faces his most dangerous mission yet when a mysterious girl named Reze enters his life. It’s brutal, it’s romantic in the most twisted way, and it asks whether anyone cares about Denji’s actual heart when everyone’s after his chainsaw one. Love and survival collide in a world where the rules don’t exist.

For something more intimate and theatrical, Kiss of the Spider Woman brings us into a prison cell where two unlikely cellmates form a profound connection. Valentín is a political prisoner, Molina is a window dresser convicted of public indecency, and together they escape their reality through the retelling of Hollywood musicals featuring the glamorous Ingrid Luna. It’s a drama with musical elements that explores friendship, storytelling, and survival through art.

If you’re drawn to political history, Quezon takes us to post-revolutionary Philippines during American occupation. This biographical drama follows Manuel L. Quezon as he navigates the brutal game of politics, using charm and favoritism as weapons in his quest for independence. His ultimate showdown with Emilio Aguinaldo in the 1935 presidential elections reshaped Philippine history, and this film doesn’t shy away from the complex moral territory.

Finally, and this one is particularly close to home, Journey Home: David Gulpilil is a documentary that honors the passing of one of Australia’s most renowned Indigenous actors. It’s a powerful record of grief, community, and ceremony as David is laid to rest on his Homeland of Gupulul in Arnhem Land. This isn’t just a film, it’s a cultural document and a celebration of an extraordinary life.
